De afgelopen tijd is er veel gebeurd bij YUA. Zo reisden de studenten van de Amsterdamse Kriterion projecten naar Palestina om het nieuwste Kriterion project in Ramallah te bezoeken en organiseerden de studenten van Kriterion Monrovia een succesvolle tweede editie van het EuroLiberian Film Festival en een campagne voor de bewustwording over het coronavirus. Ook sloot Kriterion Sarajevo na zeven bijzondere jaren haar deuren, waarover je meer kan lezen op de projectpagina van Kriterion Sarajevo op deze website. In deze roerige tijden merkten we dat de intensieve begeleiding die we tot dan toe aan de projecten hadden geboden niet meer haalbaar was binnen de capaciteit van de organisatie. 2020 werd een jaar van bezinning en strategievorming.

Na dertien jaar honderden jongeren in Bosnië-Herzegovina, Servië, Kosovo, Liberia en Palestina te hebben ondersteund in het opzetten van hun eigen culturele ondernemingen heeft YUA besloten om een stapje terug te nemen. Het intensief begeleiden van startende ondernemingen in de uitdagende contexten waar de YUA projecten in opereerden, bleek voor de organisatie teveel om te dragen. Na de succesvolle uitwisseling met de studenten uit Ramallah bleek opnieuw dat de kracht van YUA ligt in het uitwisselen van kennis en het ondersteunen van jongeren in hun initiatieven. Dit nieuwe concept, waarbij de kennis en het netwerk van YUA centraal staan, is aangeboden aan Stichting Kriterion en de Amsterdamse Kriterion projecten, waarbij YUA als onderdeel van de Kriterion familie zou kunnen blijven voortbestaan. De uitwisselingen van YUA zouden op deze manier een onderdeel worden van het werken bij Kriterion en door de studenten zelf geïnitieerd en uitgevoerd worden. Nu de Kriterion projecten bezig zijn om zich te bezinnen en in deze roerige tijden het hoofd boven water te houden, ligt het idee voor YUA als uitwisselingsproject voorlopig op de plank.

Het bestuur van YUA blijft voorlopig nog aan om de lopende projecten in goede banen te leiden. We zijn ontzettend dankbaar voor alle fantastische jaren dat wij YUA mochten runnen en voor alle geweldige mensen die, zowel in Nederland als in het buitenland, zich hebben ingezet voor de organisatie. A lot has been going on at YUA over the past few years. First of all, a number of students from the Amsterdam Kriterion projects travelled to Palestine to visit the latest Kriterion project in the city of Ramallah. Second, the students of Kriterion Monrovia successfully organized the second edition of the EuroLiberian Film Festival, in collaboration with the EU. And finally, Kriterion Sarajevo had to make the difficult decision to close its doors permanently, after seven wonderful years. You can read more about the closure of Kriterion Sarajevo here . During these eventful times, we came to the realization that we could not provide the same level of support to the separate projects as we have done in the past, within the capacity of our organization. So we entered a period of strategic thinking and reflection.

After having supported hundreds of students in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo, Liberia and Palestine in their endeavors to build cultural enterprises, we have reached the conclusion that it is now time for YUA to take a step back. It became clear that combination of the level of support which we provided and the harsh circumstances in which YUA usually operated, has become too straining for the organization. The successful exchange with the students in Ramallah has shown us that YUA’s strength lies in creating connections and building networks through cultural exchange and providing young people with guidance regarding their initiatives. This created a new concept which centers around YUA’s knowledge and network, has been pitched to the Kriterion projects as well as the Kriterion Foundation in Amsterdam. The idea was that the cultural exchanges could become a part of working at a Kriterion project in Amsterdam and would be organized and executed by the students themselves. However, the projects and the foundation in Amsterdam were going through hard times themselves as well, and they already have quite a lot on their plates while trying to remain afloat in these difficult times. And so, the idea for YUA as primarily an exchange program has been shelved. 

The YUA board will remain in function for the time being in order to ensure that the current projects continue to run smoothly. We are extremely grateful for all the fantastic years we have been able to run YUA and for all the wonderful people who have worked for our organization, both in the Netherlands and abroad. As soon as the conditions allow it, we will host a grande finale party, about which we will certainly inform everyone!
